Quentin hears mother say things like, “what have I done to have been given children like these…except Jason he has never given me one moment’s sorrow since I first held him in my arms.” He hears how she disapproves of him, Caddy, and Benjy, knows that she considers them strangers, that she believes they are Compsons whereas Jason is the only true Bascomb. How does this affect his views about Caddy and about himself?
Mrs. Compson is extremely class-conscious. “I was taught that there is no halfway ground that a woman is either a lady or not but I never dreamed when I held her in my arms that any daughter of mine could let herself…I know things she’s done that I’d die before I’d have you know…” How does this affect his chivalric views and his views about shame and his views about how to deal with Caddy’s promiscuity?
